Job Summary:

 

The Office of the Dean of Students is seeking a Director of the Office of Advocacy. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE ), 12-month, professional faculty position.

 

The Director of the Office of Advocacy works in partnership with the Office of the Dean of Students (ODOS ) and the Associated Students of Oregon State (ASOSU ). ODOS is dedicated to providing educational and developmental opportunities for students to make informed decisions that support their success at Oregon State University (OSU ). On behalf of ODOS , the Director provides strategic leadership, supervision of professional faculty, and fiscal management for the programs and services within the ASOSU unit.

 

The Director provides strategic leadership by developing long and short-term goals that align with OSU’s Strategic Plan ‘Prosperity Widely Shared’ and the Division of Student Affairs’ Strategic Plan ‘Thriving Together’. The Director is the lead Student Advocate in the Office of Advocacy as well as provides strategic leadership to each ASOSU subunit by working collaboratively with professional faculty and student leaders to plan, develop, and administer policies, programs, and services. In Student Government, the Director serves as the supervisor to the Senior Student Government Advisor. In Advocacy, the Director leads the office, provides training, subject matter expertise, and conflict resolution for complex problems, including Title IX, and supervises the Associate Advocate.

 

In SafeRide, the Director develops, implements, evaluates, and revises policies and practices to ensure operations consistent with OSU policies for employment, insurance, and risk management as well as supervises the Coordinator. The Director serves as the department administrator for ASOSU Student Legal Services and liaises directly with the selected service provider, providing guidance for the vision for ASOSU Student Legal Services as well as stewardship of the relationship with the service provider. The Director is expected to be culturally informed on the different intersectional identities that may impact a student’s experiences.

Key Responsibilities

 

40% STUDENT ADVOCACY , ADVISING AND PROGRAM LEADERSHIP - Serve as the lead Student Advocate in the Office of Advocacy and provide strategic leadership for program initiatives and operations - Provide strength-based case management for a case load of students in need of support and advocacy with issues that could result in separation from the university and any case that involves Title IX respondent support - Advise student leaders in student government as needed, in consultation with professional faculty - Advise students with regard to Advocacy-related issues as needed in consultation with professional faculty (for example, regarding student-led policy initiatives) - Provide advising and support for students with various critical stakeholders such as the OSU Board of Trustees, President and President’s Cabinet, other campus senior leaders, state legislators, federal lawmakers, and more - Provide oversight for ongoing student employee development through training and assessment efforts - Effectuates and identifies criteria for program and services assessments, facilitates the collection and analysis of the data, and oversees resulting plans for improvements - Advise student leadership on assessment methodology and guide efforts in program and service evaluation - Advise SafeRide student employees as needed, in consultation with professional faculty (for example, regarding performance issues or grievances)

 

30% BUDGETING AND OPERATIONS - Serve as budget manager to the unit, providing planning, monitoring, and reconciliation of budgets and spending, and completion of final reports - Determine resource needs and priorities of each unit in collaboration with subunit leads, Student Advisory Board, and Student Fee Committee (SFC ) - Deliver formal, public presentations of ASOSU’s unit-wide budget to the ASOSU Student Advisory Board, ASOSU Senate, and the SFC , including OSU’s student body, media, and the general public - Review quarterly spending reports, update projections, and manage operational balances and reserve - Approve purchasing and travel expenditures - Oversee unit’s space usage and assignments as well as the unit’s equipment inventory and manage process for equipment use - Serve as primary representative to provide oversight for the office suites, including liaising with other suite tenants and MU/SEC partners - Manage contracts for services, including Student Legal Services, marketing/design services, and operational software within units - Develop and implement policies, policies and protocols for the ASOSU unit

 

20% SUPERVISION OF PROFESSIONAL FACULTY - Serve as the unit leader of the professional/faculty staff in the ASOSU unit - Supervise and provide oversight to professional faculty/staff in Student Government, Advocacy, and SafeRide - Responsible for providing training and professional development of professional faculty - Planning, assigning, and approving work - Performance evaluation and management - Recruitment, hiring, and continued development of professional and student staff - Identify and enforce performance standards - Coordinate and lead regular ASOSU unit professional faculty/staff meetings - Advise and train other professional faculty members acting as a subject matter expert in the areas of student governance, student leadership program operations, and student advocacy

 

10% ORGANIZATIONAL LEADERSHIP & OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED - Participate in and lead/contribute to projects and regular meetings of the ODOS . Serve on the ODOS Director Team. - Build relationships between students, faculty, and university leadership - Lead unit process to identify short-term and long-term goals and support subunit processes to conduct program planning - Serve on various committees and undertake special projects upon invitation or as requested by the Associate Dean of Student Belonging - Other duties as assigned that assists with but not limited to problem solving, strategic planning, and organization development

 

What You Will Need

 

• Master’s degree in education, public policy, jurisprudence, or related field

• 5 years of professional experience working in Student Affairs or related field

• 2 years of experience supervising professional staff, graduate students, and/or undergraduate students

• Experience providing departmental leadership, including, budgeting, oversight of operations and long-term planning

• Experience advising others on the interpretation of policies and procedures

• Demonstrated ability to coach others toward self-advocacy using a strength-based approach

• Strong interpersonal communication in both written and oral formats

• Demonstrated experience collaborating with a variety of university and/or community constituents

 

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months. 

 

What We Would Like You to Have


 

• Experience interpreting or training others on Title lX and policies related to sexual misconduct

• Experience in mediation and/or conflict resolution

• Demonstrated practice of supporting multiple student populations (athletes, international students, student veterans, students of color, student parents, etc.)

• Experience using a trauma informed approach in case work

 

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

 

Some evenings and weekend work required.
