Peer Counselor FAFSA Verification
The Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships (OSFAS) at the University of Oregon supports students and their families in navigating the financial aspects of college, including grants, scholarships, loans, and work-study opportunities. The office offers guidance on applications, eligibility, and funding options, while also hosting workshops and events to serve the campus community.
Peer Counselors play a key role by advising students and families on financial aid, assisting with office operations such as document management and responding to inquiries, and representing OSFAS at outreach events. Through this experience, Peer Counselors develop valuable skills in communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and professionalism, while helping students access the resources they need to succeed and demonstrating a strong commitment to the values and growth fostered at the University of Oregon. OSFAS works to ensure equitable access to opportunities and resources.
Applicants must meet the following requirements to be considered for the Peer Counselor Program within the Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships:
- Current enrollment as a University of Oregon student during the 2025–2026 academic year.
- Availability to work a minimum of 10 hours per week during OSFAS business hours (8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday).
- Commitment to participate in mandator training during 2-3 week of their shift
- Professional demeanor with punctuality and reliability for all scheduled shifts.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and tactfully.
- Attention to detail and accuracy in all tasks.
- Ability to follow instructions, problem-solve, and apply critical thinking skills.
- Ability to work effectively and contribute to a high-functioning team environment.
- Capacity to maintain strict confidentiality of student records, consistent with FERPA requirements.
Required trainings and certifications will be provided by OSFAS during onboarding, including FERPA compliance training and office-specific financial aid training.
· Ensure accuracy of student financial aid applications by auditing data, reviewing documents (tax transcripts, income forms) and resolving discrepancies in compliance with federal, state, and institutional regulations.
· Provide financial aid information and counseling via phone and in-person interactions with students (current and prospective) and their families, UO staff, and the community regarding financial aid and scholarship information
· Serve as the lobby receptionist which includes checking visitors in for drop-in counseling, document intake, providing information, and triaging requests
· Serve in an office support capacity which could include responding to office emails, filing confidential documents, and preparing documents for processing
· Represent OSFAS at university recruitment and informational events and programs (tabling, answering questions)
