Wabeno Public Library Director

  1. General Purpose: The library director administers the overall program of library services offered to the community in accordance with the policies established by and under the direct supervision of the Wabeno Public Library Board of Trustees and Wisconsin Valley Library Service.
  2. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for the position.
    • Working with the Library Board
      • Provide administrative support to the board.
      • Prepare agendas for monthly and special meetings and post where required
      • Compile and distribute background materials for the agenda including monthly and
        annual statistical reports
      • Keep the board informed about new programs and services to be considered.
      • Develop a draft version of the annual budget to be reviewed and approved by the board
      • Assist the board in developing or revising policies and procedures and enforce them as
        necessary to protect library property
      • Bring issues facing the library to the board with options and recommendations for dealing
        with the issues
      • Oversee the maintenance of the library building and grounds
      • Conduct ongoing evaluation of existing programs, services, policies & procedures, and
        submit recommendations for improvement to the board
      • Inform of local, regional, state and national developments in library fields
    • Public Service Activities
      • Operate the library with a philosophy of service that puts the needs of patrons first and
        respond to their needs in a positive, helpful, friendly, creative manner
      • Develop and oversee a variety of programs designated to meet the needs of a diverse
        public
      • Ensure that a wide variety of materials is available to users of all ages and provide
        reference and information services including access to electronic information
      • See to it that all library services are designed to be accessible to everyone in the
        community including individuals with disabilities or unique abilities
      • Maintain records showing programs offered and the number of attendees
      • Have a working understanding of current and developing services and technologies and
        their costs as they relate to library operations and services
      • Assist patrons with reader advisory services, reference work and equipment including
        computers, copiers, and faxes
      • Perform circulation tasks including but not limited to checking in and checking out
        materials; receiving fees; library card registration; answering phones
    • Collection Management
      • Implement and maintain the circulation system under the regulations of the V-Cat Consortium.
      • Select or direct the selection of materials based on collection development policy and manage the acquisition, classifying, cataloging, and processing of these materials
      • Oversee the circulation of materials with other libraries in the system and the state through inter-library loans
      • Maintain a public catalog of all materials in the collection
      • Develop and implement a regular weeding schedule
      • Oversee shelving and organization of materials
      • Purchase necessary supplies
    •  Supervise Staff and Implement Personnel Policies
      • Hire, train, supervise, evaluate, discipline and terminate (if necessary) staff
      • Coordinate and plan work and schedules
      • Recommend improvements in staffing, organization and salaries to the board.
      • Create and maintain a positive work environment showing respect for all employees and volunteers.
      • Be responsible for the safety of all employees
      • Maintain confidential personnel records
      • Approve and submit time sheets to the town
    •  Develop Budget, Manage Money and Maintain Records
      • Develop a draft version of the annual library budget for review and approval by the board
      • Submit the approved budget appropriation request to the town for their approval
      • Submit bills to the town clerk for payment in a timely manner and maintain financial records of the expenditures
      • Accept and acknowledge all donations and memorials
      • Report annually to the Wisconsin Department of Instruction
      • Submit annual funding requests to adjacent counties for reimbursement
    •  Advocate for and Promote the Library
      • Actively participate in quarterly Forest County Library Board meetings
      • Report library activities at the town board meeting when requested
      • Implement the policies and goals of the library as established by the board
      • Prepare press releases, develop displays, or make presentations to the community advertising programs and services
      • Relate library objectives to community needs and represent the library on community boards and committees
      • Guide and direct the growth and development of the library
    • Develop Policies and Procedures
      • Develop new policies and present to the Board for their approval
      • Develop procedures based on Board-approved policies
      • Enforce library rules to protect library property
    • Manage the Library Facility
      • Communicate with the Wabeno Town Board and Park Board concerning the care and maintenance of the library facility and grounds
      • Assure library interior and exterior areas are clean, clutter-free and ADA compliant
      • Review building needs and report them to the board
      • Purchase necessary supplies

Working Requirements: The mission of the Wabeno Public Library is to enrich lives by providing free and open access to a variety of materials and services which fulfill the educational, informational, cultural, and recreational needs of the people of the Wabeno community and the surrounding area.

      • Current library hours are weekdays subject to Library Board discretion
    • Working Conditions & Equipment Requirements
      • Capacity to handle sitting, standing, walking, climbing, stooping, kneeling, bending, twisting, reaching
      • Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds or less
      • Ability to push or pull objects weighing 100-200 pounds on wheels
      • Proficient use of computers, copy machine, and fax machine
      • Possess manual dexterity to handle keyboarding, writing, filing, sorting, shelving, and processing materials
      • Use of library automation system, telephone, calculator, microfilm reader necessary
      • Competent accounting abilities
      • Ability to interpret statistical data, analyze information, evaluate and prepare reports and recommendations
      • Capable of setting priorities to meet assignment deadlines
      • Have available transportation to arrive to work on time
    • Educational Requirements
      • A bachelors or associate degree is preferred. Minimum requirement: 54 semester hours at an accredited college or university including at least 27 credits in liberal arts
      • Grade 3 Wisconsin Public Librarian Certificate or eligibility for temporary certification and complete regular certification requirements within 4 years of hire date
      • Maintain required certification through necessary course work and/or qualifying continuing education
      • Proficiency in the use of automated databases, word processing functions, and basic internet access.
  4. Selection Guidelines
    • Formal application, ratings of education and experience. Preference is given to three years of progressively responsible public library experience, or five years of experience in a service institution with comparable demands and responsibilities (ie. Staff supervision, working directly with the public, working with governing boards or bodies.

    • Reference and background check

The position is 26 hours per week. The wage is negotiable up to $20 per hour, based on experience.
