Principal Clerk

The Economic Development & Planning Department is seeking a Principal Clerk who will work within the Code Compliance Division. This position will maintain the rental program by tracking approximately 30,000 rental units, verifying paid property taxes, issuing rental certificates to landlords, and collecting monies for inspections. It also includes assisting customers over the phone, gathering info for FOIA requests, research, and assisting the Code Enforcement Officers, as needed. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS & TRAINING:
This position requires that the applicant placed in this position be able to be bonded under terms of the City's blanket bond. Therefore, applicants can not have committed any dishonest acts before, or after, placement in this position. Applicants must authorize the release of any information from appropriate agencies regarding the applicant's criminal history.

IDEAL CANDIDATES WILL POSSESS THE FOLLOWING:

  • High School Diploma or GED; AND
  • Three (3) years of diversified office clerical experience which includes the use of word processing and spreadsheet software;
  • Or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Knowledge and experience with BS&A (preferred)

ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS INLCUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Maintains "rental program" by tracking approximately 30,000 rental units, verifying paid property taxes, issuing rental certificates to landlords, and collecting monies for inspections.
  • Answers high volume of calls, refer, and schedule customers to the appropriate Code Enforcement Officer personnel.
  • Collect money on a daily basis, balance registers, and accurately record
    monies received.
  • Gathers information for Freedom of Information Acts requests.
  • Researches and collects data and prepares various reports as assigned.
  • Prepares and mails inspection, late payment and no-show bills, operates mail stuffing equipment.
  • Assists Code Enforcement Officer as needed, including contacting Law Enforcement Officials to assist Code Officers in the field.
  • Check for any delinquent taxes and failure to register properties before issuing registrations and certificates.
  • Working with Board of Water & Lights and Consumer Energy regarding
    utility status of residences within the city of Lansing.
