STDT 2 - Vivarium Assistant

Job Purpose

To assist with the care and welfare of research mice in a supportive role within a large scale, genetically modified mouse production facility. This posting is for multiple hires in our conventional barrier and maximum barrier facilities.

Job Description

Student assistants, while adhering to all facility security and biosecurity requirements, will learn to properly observe and handle mice, perform IP injections, identify vaginal copulatory plugs, and perform basic husbandry chores including: welfare checks to ensure adequate feed and water levels, cage changing, identification of sick/injured mice, and euthanasia of adult and neonatal mice. Students will also assist with supply transport, general cleaning, supply preparation, using the laboratory dishwasher and autoclave, with some data entry under the guidance of Staff Research Associates. Additional work duties may include performing basic behavior testing; reading mouse ID's and performing appropriate restraint for various testing procedures; blood and tissue collection and biological sample handling; material preparation, labeling, and storage; and assisting with various other procedures and data collections.

Hours are assigned and will include evenings, weekends, UC Davis recognized holidays, and daytime hours. Summer, weekend, evening, and holiday availability is expected of all student employees. A background check is required, and employment is contingent upon successful completion. UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014. Qualifications

Biology/animal science/pre-vet/pre-med majors preferred, however we are willing to train the right candidates. Prior animal handling experience is desired; veterinary, mouse, and/or injection skills are a plus. Must possess excellent communication skills and use UCD email regularly. Must be willing and available to work evenings, weekends and holidays, and correctly carry out assigned duties with indirect supervision. Weekend, Summer, and Holiday availability is a non-negotiable requirement. Must be willing to work in an environment that utilizes animals for biomedical research. Reliable transportation and punctuality is essential as this position is located off campus and work is time sensitive.
